Here’s the ellodave round up of things to look out for and forward to in the design world this month.
things to see.

Light Night Stoke-on-Trent 31st Jan – 2nd Feb | Burslem, Stoke on Trent
Not a design event, but definitely a step in the right direction for introducing more arts and culture events to the city – Light Night Stoke-on-Trent will transform Burslem into a glittering light show. Heritage buildings will be aglow with projections, dark corners will be filled with vibrant artworks and the streets of the Mother Town will be illuminated by a musical parade of a different kind (think exuberant life-size toy drummers and ethereal larger-than-life puppets).

Sarah Boris:100-meter hurdle race/10 hurdles in design Jan 24th | Birmingham City University, Birmingham
In the past, Sarah Boris has worked for the likes of Phaidon, The Barbican and Tate (to name a few) before she set up her own graphic design business in 2015. In this talk she will open up about the hurdles she has faced throughout her career – from studying type design in Paris, to her pursuit of the ideal work-life balance. Considering her plethora of projects and clients throughout her career, we expect the evening to be totally compelling. The talk is free, but you have to register to attend.
Martin Parr: Return to Manchester Throughout Jan | Manchester Art Gallery, Manchester
Parr returned to Manchester on several occasions throughout the summer of 2018 to document Mancunians and how little – or not so – their lives have changed since he last documented the streets of the northern city throughout the 70s and 80s. These images will be shown alongside one another, a study in what we eat, wear, buy and do, from then until now in Parr’s iconic wry way.
UX Crunch Manchester Design Sprints 15thJanuary | WeWork Spinningfields, Manchester
Design Sprints are the buzz word of the season. The concept was created by Google Ventures, but what do they mean and how can the designers of today use them? For an enlightening evening of theoretical insight, case studies and tips to apply to your personal design process, make sure you book tickets. There’ll be guest speakers, pizza and drink – what more could you ask for?
things to buy.
London Art Fair 16th– 20thJanuary | Business Design Centre, London
Does the new year call for new artwork adorning your walls? Excellent timing – the London Art Fair is the perfect place to discover extraordinary modern and contemporary art… and then buy it! Not only is there an expansive collection of prints and editions to peruse, there are talks, tours, screenings and curated spaces (think exhibitions within the exhibition). With over 100 different exhibitors descending on the five day event, there’s plenty to see from both household names and emerging artists.
