Journeys Drawn: Illustration from the Refugee Crisis 9th Nov – 24th Mar | House of Illustration, London
In situations where access to photographers is restricted, illustrators have the unique opportunity to act as visual journalists. This exhibition showcases examples such as this, exploring the refugee crisis through illustration – two of the artists are refugees themselves. Works will range from war torn Syria, to an Australian detention centre, and the Calais Jungle, where each artist has spent time, observing and recording. Iranian artist Majid Adin’s work will be at the exhibition – he won an award for his re-imagining of Elton John’s Rocket Man, taking inspiration from his own journey to the UK. The Breadwinner 13th Nov | Foxlowe Arts Centre, Leek
This award-winning animated feature film is set in Kabul in 2001 and follows the story of Pravana, an 11-year-old girl growing up under the Taliban. After her father’s arrest, Pravana cuts off her hair and dresses like a boy in order to provide for her family, in the absence of the patriarch. Equally thrilling and enchanting, this beautiful story is inspiring, teaching us to have hope even in the darkest of times.
